"Beetlebum"
Blur
Blur

This song feels much longer than it's three and a half minutes and maybe it's because of it's soft-loud-soft-loud structure which can sometimes give a song multiple lives. There's nothing too exciting going on anywhere in the song, but when put together it totally works and it's a great one. I think most everyone alive in the early '00s would recognize the hook of this song and it occurs multiple times.

Blur cracks me up because their thick accents come out in the songs and often it's difficult to realize the real lyrics. So you sing along for years and then one day you see the lyrics written out and realize you've had them wrong all that time.

Beetlebum
What you done
She’s a gun
Now what you’ve done
Beetlebum
Get nothing done
You beetlebum
Just get numb
Now what you’ve done
Beetlebum

And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on all my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong, I just slip away and I am gone
Nothing is wrong, she turns me on

Beetlebum
Because you’re young
She’s a gun
Now what you’ve done
Beetlebum
She’ll suck your thumb
She’ll make you come
Coz, she’s your gun
Now what you’ve done
Beetlebum
He’s on, he’s on, he’s on it

"Medicine Ball"

This song is Rogue Wave's "Bob Dylan"-esque song. It has that feeling of lyrics being squished into too short of a period of time. It does NOT have the nasally sound that Bob Dylan has made famous but there is not doubt of the influence here. I love the sound of this song as it conflicts with itself, going between a folky sound and a strict drum beat kind of feel.

No lyrics, I'll have to type them up myself

"Nanny Nanny Boo Boo"
Le Tigre
This Island

I LOVE Le Tigre because they are totally crazy and original. This song sounds a little juvenile but it's still a lot of fun. It's not your typical song with guitar, bass, and drums...it's built on sounds. Lots and lots of sounds. And then fun vocals mixed in. I like it a lot and it makes me want to dance. The beat is strict and not too fast which makes it sound like it's going to break out and speed up but it never does. I think that's where the energy comes from: never really going crazy. The closest thing is the little breakdown of instruments about 2 minutes in.

nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
if you ask us how we want it we'll say man to man
when you go to kiss our cheeks we're gonna put out our hands because
all night we've been talking to liars
and it's all right, just not in the style of tigers
and if you ask us what we're doin we'll
"it doesn't matter to you"
all you need to know is we love to see the crowd move
so turn it up
it really isn't loud enough
when we say when we know you think it's too much
so what?
nanny nany, nanny nanny boo boo
so what?
it's just a joke man, just an interview
so what?
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
so what?
you'll never get it, i guess this shit is too new
now lets synchronize our movements till they're super sick

we got high hats and loud claps in every mix
we're like boys, just ask her, dicks done by C.P. Caster
hey look out you're still in slip mode!
thanks but now i'm in batch capture
and if you ask us why we're laughing we'll say
"it doesn't matter to you"
all you need to know is we love to see the crowd move
so turn it up
it really sn't loud enough
when we say when we know you think too much
so what?
nanny nanny..
heaphones and velcro and pictures of mars
new mics and dirt bikes and candy bars
bowties and snkeaers while making beats
hard drives and handbooks and hotel sheets
so what?
it doesn't matter to you...
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
so what?
I do it every night
she does it in her man suit
so what?
nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo
so what?
we never said it but you know we alwaus wanted to
so what?

"White Wedding"
Billy Idol
The Wedding Singer Soundtrack

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 2

I used to play this song every week for my Dedication Radio show in college for my brother. Just because he was engaged and it mentioned, "little sister". I LOVE this song because it has so much energy but at the same time it's reserved. About two minutes in it really gets fun with some growl from Idol and the guitar solo. And I just love the little, "yeow!" he gives every once and awhile. Oh man, this song is just so hott because of all of the energy just under the surface.

Hey little sister what have you done
Hey little sister who's the only one
Hey little sister who's your superman
Hey little sister who's the one you want
Hey little sister shot gun!

It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

Hey little sister what have you done
Hey little sister who's the only one
I've been away for so long (so long)
I've been away for so long (so long)
I let you go for so long

It's a nice day to start again (come on)
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

(Pick it up)

Take me back home
There is nothin' fair in this world
There is nothin' safe in this world
And there's nothin' sure in this world
And there's nothin' pure in this world
Look for something left in this world
Start again
Come on

It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again

"Mr. Farmer"
The Seeds
Almost Famous Soundtrack

Nmber of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 2

I don't think I've ever heard this song before. Sometimes I buy soundtracks just because I liked the movie and then rarely listen to it. This song isn't too bad thoug-like sound going on. Simple, repetitive lyrics. It works.

The song isn't driving forward but it has that feeling anyway from the constant beat. "Mr. Farmer" is from the '60s but it sounds like current stuff, too.

See the farmer on the other side of town
He's always working hard 'til the sun goes down
He's up every morning right on five, a wanting green seeds just to come alive,
But he don't wear a no farm clothes, he's always using a rake and hoe,
But his seeds are starting to grow, like a big stalk up through the sky

He used to live in an apartment in a big old city
With thick and priestly windows built right in it
But he decided to move to a little tiny town
He wanted to be a farmer all year round
And on a country road where you can't see a thing
He's got five acres filled little green things, he said
He's working so hard all night and day

Mr. Farmer let me watch your crops
Mr. Farmer let me water your crops
Mr. Farmer let me harvest your crops
I want to have a dream come true
I said a farmer, farmer, farmer
I want to be just like you

See the farmer a walking down town, always draws a crowd when he's around
He's always wearing seedy clothes, he's shows them off whereever he goes
You can spot him anywhere, got a bright pink thumb but he don't care,
I said, he looks like something from a very bad dream

Mr. Farmer let me watch your crops
Mr. Farmer let me water your crops
Mr. Farmer let me harvest your crops
Mr. Farmer let me save your crops

I said, a farmer, farmer, farmer...

"Wonderful Violin"
Sandor Lakatos
Music From Hungary

Number of listens: ||
Stars (out of 5): 3

My sister, Ali, plays the violin so I have a fond appreciation for it. Luckily, she buys a lot of classical CDs, too, and lets me put them on my iPod. This is one of those CDs. I am practically obsessed with Eastern European music and have been very pleased with this collection of pieces.

Ok, so Sandor Lakatos is a Hungarian gypsy violinist. Cool!

This is a very easy-going piece, only a couple of minutes long with nothing too crazy going on. It ends with a flourish and, for me anyway, makes me listen to it again just for that ending.

"Girl In The Mirror"
Britney Spears
Your #1 Requests...And More

I don't care if you make fun of me for having Britney Spears' CDs. She's a great entertainer and has some awesome dance music. Okayyyy, so this isn't a great dance song but it's really not terrible. It is one of those songs that I'll keep on because it's enjoyable to sing along with. I could have a category full of songs like that. I'm a horrible singer but I can't not sing when I hear music so I really appreciate those songs that are fun to sing along with.

Musically, this is your typical pop song. There really isn't much to say.

There's a girl in the mirror
I wonder who she is
Sometimes I think I know her
Sometimes I really wish I did
There's a story in her eyes
Lullabies and goodbyes
When she's looking back at me
I can tell her heart is broken easily

'Cause the girl in my mirror
Is crying out tonight
And there's nothing I can tell her
To make her feel alright
Oh the girl in my mirror
Is crying 'cause of you
And I wish there was something
Something I could do

If I could
I would tell her
Not to be afraid
The pain that she's feeling
The sense of loneliness will fade
So dry your tears and rest assured
Love will find you like before
When she's looking back at me
I know nothing really works that easily

'Cause the girl in my mirror
Is crying out tonight
And there's nothing I can tell her
Oh the girl in my mirror
Is crying 'cause of you

And I wish there was something
I wish there was something
Oh I wish there was something
I could do

I can't believe it's what I see
That the girl in the mirror
The girl in the mirror
Is me

I can't believe what I see (no....)
(The girl in my mirror)
The girl in my mirror is me
Ohh...is me

'Cause the girl in my mirror
Is crying out tonight
And there's nothing I can tell her
To make her feel alright
Oh the girl in my mirror
Is crying 'cause of you
I wish there was something
I wish there was something
Oh I wish there was something
I could do

"Somewhere Only We Know"
Keane
Hopes And Fears

Number of listens: ||

This song had to grow on me. I couldn't stand his voice at first, it was way too high and weird. But thanks to Barnes and Noble and their lack of in-store plays, I got to listen to this song at least twice a day for a good month. Two things helped me to enjoy this song more: seeing them perform it live (on TV) and actually listening to the lyrics.

It was a big deal when Keane first hit it big for them not having a guitar player and it's cool because as you listen to this song especially, you would swear there's a guitar in there if you didn't know better. It drives forward, never letting you get bored enough to turn it off or to skip to the next track. I can't help but imagine him singing this heartfelt poem to his (almost?) lost love and trying to salvage what may be left. This could be a twenty-something's anthem.

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

[break]

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

"Blue In Green"
Miles Davis
RS 500

See, I told you I would do these reviews completely random. Do you think an instrumental jazz piece would be my 21st pick? I'm not a big jazz fan, I'll admit it. I appreciate it and even understand a lot of it but it just doesn't hook me like other music does. And let me make the distinction right now between structured jazz and the kind that gets improvisational and even "jam"-like. I do NOT like the latter. I remember being in one of those cliche, smoky jazz bars in New York just wishing for the song to end. I like structure, so sue me.

But back to the song...I either need to be wearing a black cocktail dress and sipping brandy or it be 3am and I'm the last one in the bar. Obviously Miles Davis is a good musician but I'm just not jumping out of my seat for this piece.

"I'm A Terrible Person"

I bought this CD for like $3 and because I saw them on The O.C. It's very pop punkish. Well, maybe not so much punk but it's not straight up pop. OK, I'm babbling. So is this song.

It starts off nicely with solo guitar and voice. Adds in drums, etc. It definitely hooks you at first but then once it starts I just lose all interest. It reminds me of Piebald actually. Piebald in high school or something. Yes, that's it. This song is aimed towards someone much younger.

I'm a terrible person
I'm a terrible person
I'm a terrible person
Cause I've made up my mind
I'm a terrible person
Cause I've led her on

And I'm the only one who knows what I've done to her
I'm much smarter now
I won't tell her friends before her
I'm afraid

It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday [x4]

I'm a horrible person
I read her diary
I'm not to be trusted
I told all of her secrets to all the guys in town
They all laugh and slap me five
Luckily she doesn't have dirt on me
Cause I'm the cleanest guy
I'm afraid

It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday [x4]

[x2]
I don't think I'll ever be sorry
No I'm not sorry for a thing I've done
And I don't think I'll ever wake up lonely
Cause having her around wasn't all that special

It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday [x4]
