How It Feels To Be Something On

This song starts out slowly and usually that turns me off of a song but this is one of the exceptions because once it gets started it is very worth it. And honestly, pasting the lyrics here is the first time I've ever known what he is singing about. See, that's how I listen to music: I barely pay attention to the lyrics for a long time because it's the melody and use of intruments and things like that that I enjoy. Later, as I am more familiar with the (non-singing) musical parts I can then move onto the lyrics and hopefully it can make the song even better.
Sunny Day Real Estate is one of those bands that does not use the formulaic song writing approach with their songs. A vocal line is not necessarily the beginning and end of a measure or a 4/8 bar span or any specific piece of the music. It doesn't always "fit" and what would be a sentence, or a line in poetry, does not correspond with a line in music. It's a tricky songwriting "technique" because very easily it can come off sounding like crap. I think SDRE is successful despite this because his voice is very smooth and the guitars/bass/drum are fairly loud in comparison.
I enjoy this song and I think it has a lot of energy that is always on the verge of boiling over but never makes it. I would have loved to have heard it performed live.

But you were always one to stay the same girl
I know you want to be the rain
And I know that we would fall in there
For a time and then unfall again
For awhile I take you burying old bones
Dawns grey the sign in the winter light
And I know that you can feel the pain
Your eyes speak one hundred million knives

Don’t tell me you’ve gone astray
I walk in circles
I’ve seen a million things that tell me so

But I was always one to play the fool girl
Though the rules were somewhat dark to me
And I know that we could fall in there
For a time and then unfall again
For a while I give you darium bound stones
Growing through the roots of your mind to set apart
And I know that you can feel the pain
Your eyes speak one hundred million lies

Total anxiety pay for variety
We’ll wait for time to turn around your faith
Wait for time to turn

The world we sold there was a choir there

Don’t tell me you’ve gone astray
I talk in circles
Everlasting chains that bind my purpose
Only I’ve seen the million things that tell me so

Total anxiety pay for variety
Wait for time to turn around your faith
Choked on society laced with cyanide
Wait for time to turn around your faith
Wait for time to turn
